More often than not, household appliances make lives easier, but there are some circumstances where they might cause problems. Without proper maintenance, washing machines can be a huge culprit of water damage in homes. Not only can the supply lines leak, but they can also experience backups when the drain pipes get clogged.

Depending on the severity of the leak, homeowners may or may not be able to handle the water damage cleanup job on their own. If the mess is minor, they can simply wipe it up and move on. However, larger leaks and backups can be much more difficult to tackle without the help of a professional cleanup crew.

The Source of the Water Damage

A homeowner in Georgetown, Texas was using their washing machine as usual when they noticed that water had started to back up into the laundry room. It was more than just a small leak, so it was determined to be more than a minor issue with the water supply line.

Upon further inspection, the homeowner realized that the drain pipe was the source of the water damage. It had become clogged over time, and eventually, it was no longer able to drain properly. As a result, the water backed up around the washing machine.

The Services Provided for the Washing Machine Water Backup

Texas Certified Restoration has plenty of experience with water damage caused by appliances, so they were equipped to create an effective plan. They used their industry know-how to restore the laundry room and garage by:

  • Preparing the Area
  • Cleaning the Affected Surfaces
  • Thoroughly Drying the Materials

Prepare the Laundry Room

Before the contractors could get started on the cleanup, they had to prepare the area. It was important to move both the washer and dryer so that they could access the baseboards and floor behind the appliances. Once they removed the appliances, they could start the cleaning process.

Cleaning and Sanitizing to Prevent Mold

One of the biggest concerns with water damage is the possibility of mold growth. Fortunately, the concrete floor in the laundry room was easy to wipe up, so the contractors were able to clean the floor with a simple solution. They also cleaned the baseboards before applying an antimicrobial spray in the laundry room. In the garage, they sprayed a larger application of the antimicrobial solution to minimize the risk of mold growth.

Drying the Affected Areas

Another great way to prevent mold growth or other secondary water damage is to make sure that the affected areas are dried completely. Fortunately, the concrete flooring meant that this step could be completed faster than if it had a more absorbent material.

The contractors used their air movers and dehumidifiers to extract any excess moisture. One air mover and dehumidifier were used for five days in the laundry room. For the garage, they used two air movers. Finally, they concluded the job by vacuuming and wiping the garage floor clean.
