Some causes of water damage are slow and subtle, such as small leaks in appliances. Others are much more dramatic and can instantly cause thousands of dollars in damage. Pipe bursts are one of the most detrimental causes of water damage, especially if they aren’t stopped right away.

Since pipe bursts can be a major loss, homeowners often don’t have the proper tools to handle a cleanup on their own. For that reason, it’s important that they hire a water restoration company they can trust to get the job done quickly and efficiently.

Though there are several professionals who offer
water damage restorations in Austin, few are as experienced as Texas Certified Restoration. They have completed countless water damage cleanups throughout their years in service. The following case study is just one example of how they can help their customers return their property back to its pre-loss condition after a pipe burst.

The Cause of the Water Damage

A homeowner in Austin recently discovered that their home had sustained significant water damage. It primarily affected the kitchen, but the cause of the damage wasn’t immediately noticeable. Upon closer investigation, they were able to determine that the water was coming from behind the kitchen cabinets. They were able to conclude that a pipe in the wall had burst.

Due to the location of the hole in the pipe and the amount of water, the homeowners knew they wouldn’t be able to tackle this project on their own. Therefore, they picked up the phone to call their trusted
water damage restoration company.

Texas Certified Restoration’s Response

As soon as the professionals of Texas Certified Restoration received the call from the Austin homeowner, they sent a team of contractors to the property. They always arrive at every job site with the tools they need to complete a professional assessment, and this project was no exception.

The contractors used moisture meters to inspect the kitchen and other areas of the home. They were able to confirm that the damage was isolated to the kitchen, but it would require significant work to access the pipe behind the kitchen cabinets

The Water Restoration Company’s Process

By the time the inspection was completed, the contractors had a much better idea of how to approach the project for the best results. They know that every job is different, so all restoration plans must be customized to fit the unique situation. For this particular cleanup, the contractors chose to focus their efforts on the following services:

  • Removing Damaged Building Materials
  • Dry & Dehumidify the Affected Area
  • Clean & Disinfect to Prevent Mold
  • Storing & Returning Contents to Home

Removed Damaged Materials

In order to access the area most affected by the water, the contractors had to remove some of the building materials in the home. Their hope was to minimize the damage and leave the cabinets in place. As a result, they decided to remove ¾ inch plywood toe kicks below the cabinets. They ended up taking out nine feet total.

They also had to remove six square feet of insulation from behind the kitchen cabinet. They were able to use an existing hole that the plumber had made when he came to repair the pipe.

Set up Drying Equipment

From there, the experts focused on getting the affected area completely dry. They set up three air movers and dehumidifiers to run in the kitchen. They also used one air mover outside to concentrate air inside the home. This step helped to dry out the drywall that sat behind the cabinets. The equipment continued to run until moisture meters indicated that all excess moisture had been removed.

Sprayed with Antimicrobial

In order to prevent any mold growth in the future, the contractors went above and beyond to clean the affected area. They were able to use an antimicrobial spray that would eliminate any bacteria and mitigate mold.

Repaired the Affected Area

Finally, the contractors wrapped up the project by repairing the parts of the kitchen where materials were removed. They installed new insulation, closed the hole used to access it, and installed new toe kicks. By the time they were finished, the beautiful kitchen looked as good as new!
