When your roof causes water damage, time is everything. We recently completed a roof leak water damage mitigation in Killeen, TX, that shows exactly why quick action makes all the difference, and in this case study, we’ll walk you through each step.

The homeowner called us after discovering staining and bubbling paint on their bathroom ceiling, not knowing the full extent of the damage lurking behind the walls.

When the Homeowner Noticed They Had a Problem

We received a call from a homeowner in Killeen who had noticed water staining and bubbling paint on their master bathroom ceiling. The roof leak had been allowing water to drip into the attic, where it saturated the insulation and spread into the ceiling drywall and bathroom walls.

By the time they called us for help, the moisture had created staining, bubbling paint, and hidden water damage throughout the affected area. We scheduled an immediate assessment to determine the full extent of the damage and begin the mitigation process.

How Our Team Handled the Roof Leak Damage

When we arrived at this home, our moisture meters were picking up elevated readings throughout the master bathroom. The damage was more extensive than she had realized - it wasn't just the ceiling, but also portions of two walls where moisture had traveled down.

Initial Assessment and Documentation

We did a complete inspection of the affected area using our moisture meters to map out every spot where water had entered. We took detailed photos and measurements for insurance documentation and explained to the homeowner exactly what we'd found and what needed to happen next.

Opening Up and Removing Damaged Materials

We had to remove sections of the ceiling drywall and insulation to access all the wet materials. We also opened up parts of the affected walls to check for moisture behind the wallboard. Here's what we removed:

  • Ceiling drywall: The wet drywall had lost its structural integrity and was beginning to sag.
  • Insulation: The fiberglass insulation was completely saturated and had to be removed entirely.
  • Wall sections: We removed the upper portion of the drywall on the wall where moisture had traveled.

Treating Microbial Growth

We discovered some early-stage microbial growth on the back of the drywall and wall studs. We treated all affected wood framing with EPA-approved antimicrobial solutions and used HEPA filtration during the cleaning process.

Professional Drying Process

We set up air movers strategically throughout the bathroom to promote air circulation across all wet surfaces. Our dehumidifiers worked continuously to pull moisture out of the air. We monitored moisture levels daily with our meters and maintained detailed logs of the drying progress.
