Stepping in to Handle Storm Damage: How We Helped a Homeowner Recover After a Roof Leak

When a strong storm rolled through Matagorda, TX, one local homeowner found out just how quickly a roof leak can cause water damage. The roof of their home took a direct hit, and water came pouring in, affecting two bedrooms, a bathroom, and the kitchen. They reached out to us at Texas Certified Restoration to take control of the situation and make sure their home didn’t suffer long-term damage with our water damage restoration in Matagorda, TX.

The Extent of Damage

Once the roof was breached, water began to seep down into the ceiling and walls, eventually reaching the floors of two bedrooms, the bathroom, and the kitchen. By the time the homeowner noticed, the water had already soaked through the flooring and started affecting drywall and insulation.

What We Did to Get This Home Dry

When we arrived, it was clear this was a job that required a full mitigation plan, including demo, drying, and moisture control.

Initial Inspection and Moisture Mapping

The first thing we did was perform a full walkthrough of the property to inspect all the affected rooms. Using moisture meters, we checked the condition of the subfloor, drywall, and insulation. We also documented the damage for the homeowner’s insurance and created a clear action plan.

Flooring and Carpet Removal

In both bedrooms, the carpet and padding were fully saturated. We removed both, along with the vinyl flooring underneath, to get access to the subfloor. The bathroom also had water under the vinyl flooring, which we pulled up to begin the drying process.

Drywall and Insulation Removal

In one of the bedrooms, the water had soaked part of the wall. We removed the entire drywall as the leak was coming from above and we couldn’t make the usual flood cuts on the lower part of the drywall. We also pulled out any wet insulation which allowed us to dry the structure properly and prevent future mold growth.

Setting Up the Drying Equipment

We brought in professional drying equipment to handle the next phase:

  • Air Movers: We positioned these to blow across wet surfaces and increase evaporation.
  • Dehumidifiers: We placed them strategically to pull moisture from the air and prevent further spread.
  • Moisture Meters: We used moisture meters daily to track the drying progress and make sure no hidden moisture remained.
  • Daily Checks: Our team visited the home every day to check moisture levels and adjust equipment as needed.

Final Cleaning and Mold Prevention

Once everything was dry, we swept and bagged all debris, including removed drywall, flooring, and insulation. We HEPA vacuumed all exposed surfaces and treated the space with an antimicrobial solution to prevent mold from growing later on.
