Twice the Trouble: How One Killeen Homeowner Faced a Second Water Loss and Mold Outbreak

Updated on: June 11, 2024

At Texas Certified Restoration, we recently had the opportunity to help a residential homeowner who experienced their second water loss incident. The clients called our team to tackle significant water mitigation followed by a mold removal in Killeen, TX.  Mold affected their daughters' bedroom, an adjacent bathroom, and the garage. We outlined the steps we took to restore their home to its original condition while bringing back a safe and healthy environment.

Tackling Water Mitigation and Mold Removal in Bedroom and Garage

The homeowner needed a detailed and lasting solution to restore these areas and prevent further issues. Here are the steps we took to mitigate water damage in both the bedroom and garage and remove mold from the garage:

Initial Assessment

When we arrived on-site, we immediately assessed the rooms using moisture meters to determine the extent of the water damage. The girls' bedroom and the garage had significant damage to the flooring, baseboards, drywall, and insulation. The adjacent bathroom was also affected but to a lesser extent.

Water Mitigation Steps

  1. Safety First: Our first step was to ensure the safety of the team by wearing our PPE, including a mask, gloves, and goggles.

  2. Water Extraction: Using wet vacuums, we removed the standing water from the bedroom, bathroom, and garage. This step was important to prevent further damage and mold growth.

  3. Drying Process: We used floor dryers, dehumidifiers, utility fans, and air movers to dry out the affected areas. Our team worked around the clock to make sure all moisture was eliminated.

  4. Removing Damaged Materials: We carefully removed the damaged flooring, baseboards, drywall, and insulation from the bedroom and garage. All affected materials were disposed of following local regulations.

  5. Monitoring Moisture Levels: Throughout the drying process, we regularly monitored the moisture levels using our meters. We had to be sure that the areas were thoroughly dried before we moved on to the next steps.

Mold Removal Steps

  1. Air Filtration: Using air scrubbers equipped with HEPA filters, we filtered the air to remove mold spores and other harmful substances. This step was important for maintaining a safe environment for the family.

  2. Spraying of Antimicrobial Agent: We applied an industry-approved antimicrobial agent to all affected surfaces. This treatment was essential in eliminating existing mold and preventing future growth.

  3. Cleaning and Sanitizing: Following the antimicrobial treatment, all affected surfaces were thoroughly cleaned and sanitized to ensure complete mold removal and hygiene.

  4. HEPA Vacuuming: We used HEPA vacuums to remove any remaining mold spores from surfaces and the air.

  5. Final Inspection: After the mold removal process, we did a final inspection so that our clients could enjoy a mold-free environment with safe moisture levels.
